Women Pioneers of Jazz: Velma Middleton – The Armstrong Years and Beyond
Velma Middleton had the great honor of being Louis Armstrong’s female vocalist for 19 years. Her singing (and dancing) was a major element in Armstrong’s world, much to the delight of his international public. Not only will we hear Middleton sing, but this special presentation will feature her contribution to a selection of films made with Armstrong, including some true rarities. Her legacy has been largely overlooked, which is ironic given the many millions who have enjoyed her artistry. Please join vocalist Brianna Thomas & Ricky Riccardi, Director of Research Collections at the Louis Armstrong House Museum, for an-depth look into Middelton’s life and the tragic circumstances of her death at the age of 43.
