Why the Symposium?

Rejecting the Silo

Teamwork and leadership have always been esteemed in the workplace, but today are critical skills for any professional who wants to help their organization manage change. Constant change in funding, audience, and technology is driving a move to “catch up” with the healthy organization’s expectation of leadership at every managerial level. A key to leadership success is strong communication and collaboration (team) skills.  The Morningside Collaborative Leadership Symposium will support emerging leader’s professional development by delivering a highly interactive skill-building program in these sought-after and transferable skills.  With its focus on one of the most challenging aspects of doing business today – collaboration – participants and participating organizations can identify “silo busting” opportunities while strengthening their network among peer institutions in Morningside Heights.

This program has been specially designed for the emerging leaders, department heads, managers, and recommended staff and partners of our member institutions, including Barnard College, Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Columbia University, Corpus Christi, Interchurch Center, International House, Jewish Theological Seminary, Manhattan School of Music, The Riverside Church, St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s, Mt. Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital, Teachers College, Ulysses S. Grant Houses, and Union Theological Seminary.

About the Organizers

For almost 70 years, Morningside Area Alliance (MAA) has brought the leadership of our member institutions together to collaborate in neighborhood development and community service, and more recently, shared administrative services. To further its mission of promoting collaboration both within its member institutions and the greater Morningside Heights Community, MAA helps form and support inter-institutional peer learning groups focused on timely issues. With the support of the a steering committee, the organization’s leadership would like to help strengthen the capacity of engaged staff to forge internal teams and participate in both inter and intra-institutional collaborative initiatives.
