Clinical education and interventions on how to work with intimate partner violence survivors in a medical setting continue to be very limited, while intimate parter violence cases have been on the rise. It is imperative for clinicians to hold an empathetic, trauma informed, and social justice lens when working with survivors, and when assessing for trauma in patient’s lives. Building on this are the tools necessary to meet survivors where they are, in their journey towards safety, healing and recovery. This workshop will provide clinicians with the tools and insight needed to conduct these assessments, and build comfort within challenging conversations, which cannot be left unsaid. We will also provide training on the dynamics of intimate partner violence, with a focus on delivering trauma-informed interventions, practicing risk management techniques, and advocating for justice. Lastly, we will include resources that providers can utilize when working with survivors of intimate partner violence, as well as referral protocols to connect to the DOVE Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital, and delineation of the programs’ services.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify and describe three components of trauma-informed engagement specific to survivors of intimate partner violence.
2. Identify effective interventions to advocate for patients’ safety and facilitate access to justice and healing.
3. Identify resources and referrals which providers can utilize to assist patients in crisis.
4. Gather informational knowledge on the DOVE Program, and protocols for referring patients.

Speaker

Clara Ceccanti, LCSW is a clinical social worker currently employed at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center within the DOVE (Domestic and Other Violence Emergencies) Program, specializing in trauma informed care, crisis intervention as well as individual and group counseling for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, human trafficking and other forms of trauma.

Clara is also the co-coordinator for the Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners Program, ensuring for the empathic and trauma informed provision of medical and forensic care for sexual assault survivors in New York Presbyterian Emergency Departments at Columbia University Medical Center and Allen Hospital.

Clara graduated from Columbia University with a dual-Master’s degree in Social Work and International Affairs. She is an international citizen, fluent in three languages, passionate about providing psychosocial and mental health support, with a social justice and trauma informed lens within the field of gender-based violence. Clara remains active within the Columbia School of Social Work community by volunteering with the Alumni Relations office and supervising clinical social work students at DOVE.
